Custom Buttons : Creating A CUSTOM BUTTONS

Custom Button

Custom buttons : This article is a simple step-by-step guide for webmasters who want to create a Google toolbar "push button" with an icon that navigates to a site, displays an RSS feeds of that site in a drop down menu; host the buttons and make it available on their website. This type of buttons is a great way to gather all the sites of interest to you in one place in an attractive way.
A custom button is an .XML file (like feeds) and its properties and behavior are defined with a element.
The XML file elements we are going to use are following:
title- is the name of the button;
description- acts as a tooltip;
site- defines a link to a website;
icon- 16x16 .ico file which many sites use as their favicon.ico file and it has to be base64 encoded;
feed- adds the ability to open a dropdown menu with RSS feed titles and links.
As an illustrative example, we are going to use http://www.mygiftgadgets.com website, because this site has feeds and an icon.
The following basic XML produces a button that, when clicked, opens http://www.mygiftgadgets.com in the current browser window, has a title and displays a tooltip:
http://www.mygiftgadgets.com
MyGiftGadgets.com
Shopping for Gifts and Gadgets
Now that we have the main button elements in place we need an icon. You can draw a small picture using any picture editing program you may have and save the picture file to your desktop, so that you would find it easily. As mentioned before the size of the icon needs to be 16x16 pixels. The easiest way to accomplish this would be by first, generating a favicon.ico from the picture (which you can do here: http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/favicon) and saving the file to your desktop. Second, encode the favicon.ico file into ASCII text using base64 encoding (www.motobit.com/util/base64-decoder-encoder.asp), which in the end produces a base64 string - a long line of letters and numbers. As you can see creating an icon doesn't require any program installations to your computer!
The base64 string (your icon) has to be placed between the and elements as shown in the final XML file example.
MyGiftGadgets.com site also has feeds that can be shown in the dropdown menu of the custom button. In the XML file the feeds URL will be displayed between the and elements like this:
http://www.mygiftgadgets.com/wordpress/wp-rss.php
where the feed elements are:
refresh-interval - number of seconds to wait before reloading the feed, the default is 3600 (1 hour);
refresh-menuitem="false" - hides the refresh menu item any time a successful connection is made to the server.
Adding the icon and feed elements to our basic XML structure will complete the button file and the final XML file of MyGiftGadgets.com custom can be seen here: http://www.mygiftgadgets.com/mggbutton.xml
Now we are going to save the text file as mggbutton.txt and upload it to our website hosting root directory, then change the file name into mggbutton.XML and we're done with the file!
The next step is to link to the button from our site. To do that we have to create an installation link by using the following URL syntax for our mggbutton.XML file:
http://toolbar.google.com/buttons/add?url=http://www.mygiftgadgets.com/mggbutton.xml
When a user clicks on this link, the MyGiftGadgets.com button is installed in their Google toolbar. If the user doesn't have a compatible version of the toolbar, they'll be prompted to install it and the custom button will automatically be added.
After we've made sure that the custom button that we've created works (to make sure try adding it to your toolbar!) it is time to add the button to the Button Gallery by filling out the button gallery submission form (www.google.com/support/toolbar/bin/request.py?contact_type=button).
Note: "*" element is not part of the encoding and needs to be removed when using in a .xml file. It's here so that the article can be displayed properly.

Custom Button Advice : The Dos and Don'ts of CUSTOM BUTTONS Design

Custom Buttons

custom buttons :I have set up a lot of custom buttons over the years, some better designed than others. Over the years I've noticed that all of the buttons that have appealed to me the most have a few elements in common. The best designed buttons are simple, bold, and to the point.
Do keep things short and sweet. Don't try to squeeze too much in a small space.
Think of your button as mobile billboard. You have about five seconds to grab someone's attention, and 5 more for them to read your message. Keep your message clear and to the point. Buttons are small, and even if you have the greatest product or candidate in the world, if no one reads your button what's the point?
Do Use Bold Easy to Read Fonts. Don't use Comic Sans.
Large bold fonts will get your message noticed. Small thin display fonts will not. More than likely the demographic you're going after is over 12 years old. With this in mind you should not use Comic Sans as your default font choice.
Do use Color to your Advantage. Don't over do it.
Talking about color can be difficult. What is pleasing to one eye may not be to another. There is nothing wrong in choosing a color scheme because you like it, however, you do want to make sure that you color choices do not detract from your message. Keeping with a simple color scheme is a safe bet. When in doubt, consult a color wheel.
Type Color and Background Color
You want the messaging of your custom buttons to stand out. Make sure that the color of your type contrasts with your background. Don't put pink type on a red background, it will get lost. If you really want to keep the colors of your background and type close, try outlining the type or adding a glow or drop shadow. Remember when choosing the colors for your fonts and backgrounds that you are viewing them in RGB, and when they get printed in CMYK they may not appear to contrast nearly as much.
Choosing the Right Font
When designing your custom buttons take into consideration the actual size of the finished product. It's easy to forget that a one inch button is only about the size of a quarter especially when you're viewing it on a 27" monitor which displays the design 200-400 times bigger than it will print. That tiny 3 point type you added will not be visible or printable. On smaller buttons bold San-serifed fonts with clean lines are much more readable than italicized, wispy serifed display fonts. The cleaner the font the better.
Although we use high quality digital printers capable of printing up to 2400×2400 DPI, we can't make magic happen. Always make a test print of your button design at home to be sure the fonts make sense when printed. What you see on your screen may not always translate well into print. To be sure your type is readable when printed try not to use a type size smaller than 5 points.
Saving your Text
If you're saving your artwork as a.jpg this does not apply to you, but if you're working with a layered file time like PSD it does.There are thousands and thousands of fonts in existence for both MACs and PCs, and we don't have them all. When digital art is supplied to us with missing fonts, it makes processing your order problematic. You picked your fonts for a reason and don't need us making substitutions. You have two choices, embed your fonts into your graphic, or convert them to outlines. Most graphic design software can embed/create outlines relatively painlessly. If you need help figuring your software out, don't hesitate to contact us.

Custom Buttons - Arts and Crafts and a Great Business! | CUSTOM BUTTONS |

Custom Buttons

Have you ever thought about starting a small home based business? Many people have, of course. There are a wide variety of options to choose from, and a small (but fun!) option might be to craft custom buttons for friends, family, or nearby businesses!
Creating custom buttons is actually fairly easy. We've probably all seen the small pinback buttons available in your local toy shop, or gum-ball machine. And once you've seen how easy it is to create buttons for yourself, you will be amazed at the wide variety of fun, colorful buttons you can create all on your own (and even make money while doing so!).
Custom Buttons
Requires:

  • Button Blanks
  • Button Making Machine
  • Good Paper Stock for Buttons

You will need a few things to start, of course. First, are the blanks. Button blanks are small metallic forms that may or may not have a pin backing (some buttons have no pin. This is so they can be attached to clothing with a magnet to prevent having to poke a hole through garments). The button blanks are used to hold the image, which is affixed using a button making machine.
You will also need a button making machine, of course. There are many options to choose from, manual and nearly automatic. For example, a simple hand-operated button machine can help the user create a button in a couple minutes (including time to cut the image template), while some semi-automated machines can greatly speed up the process and help the user create 200-300 buttons per hour!
Finally, you will need the right paper for your buttons. The commonly accepted paper is a 24lb weight. Aside from being too expensive, heavier weight paper is prone to jamming in smaller button machines. There is no benefit to a thicker, high quality paper when creating buttons. A lighter weight paper could start to become translucent, and depending on the design you might end up with some of the metallic backing being near-visible through the paper! Certainly not the desired result! The choice in paper also depends on the recommendations of your button machine's instructions, so be sure to read instructions carefully.
Aside from the button blanks, a button making machine and some paper, there really is not a lot to it. These resources can be found readily online and are easy to work with. Button machines will have specific instructions on how to create a button using that particular machine.
For a simple hobby, it is easy enough to invest in less expensive equipment and just have fun creating buttons for your friends. But if you want to turn button making into a business, it might be recommended to practice with inexpensive equipment until you've learned how to create buttons quickly (or even see if you enjoy doing it), and then upgrade to an automated solution. In some cases, clients can pay $1-$2 per button, so it is not unrealistic to earn $200/hour for creating buttons! Even if it is just a simple, fun hobby, creating your own custom buttons can be a wonderful, fun way to get creative and let your imagination go wild and artistic! So go have fun making some buttons now!
